Christmas

Christmas came and gone. I'm back to my desk after an 11 day break, showing signs of post holiday syndrome, but is entirely happy and satisfied with how I end this year.

Friends asked me where I went during this break? I said no where, just bumming.

Well that is not exactly true. Firstly, I went to Ipoh for an one day eating trip. Then, I visited the cinema no less than six times, met up with the theater gang in FullHouse, familiarised myself with the HD TV in my living room (Dark Knight is awesome in HD), and went to Noel's new place for a Christmas-cum-secondary school reunion house party.

Ah, and also the FH-Paprika Christmas party where everyone got their ass kicked in pool (billiard) by Anjali. She is good.

But of course, Jess and I also celebrated our first Christmas Eve together. We went to Michelangelo for drinks and appetizers, then Wendy's for burgers.

Why?

Because the kitchen crew in Michelangelo was unable to serve our order after nearly two hours. Normally heads will roll for this sort of service, yet, it was Christmas Eve, so we just paid for what we had and left to watch Chipmunks 2.

Dontchu just love Christmas?

Closing the book

Can you believe this? 2009 just zoomed past us, and here we are, 10 more days before Christmas. It feels like yesterday when the then triplet (now quadruplet) told each other "2009 is all about Efficient Dynamics", don't you think?

There were a handful of joyous occasions, and a few sad ones. If I am to sum it all up, I will remember 2009 as the year when I became MINI Master (I got a cert for this okay), promoted to SAE, went to Taipei, traveled with MAS to Sandakan, done drive events in Kuching + K.Terengganu, BMW Shorties 2009, and the new HD-Ready TV in my living room rocks.

Of course, I also found you. The one with many nicknames- talk back machine, DDSD, and now Rudolph. Here's to another year of sweet and exciting journey.

2009 is also the year we decided to walk out from a six years (or is it seven?) client-agency relationship. To the account that made me who I am today, I bid you farewell. Although I will miss you dearly, I'm also certain that this separation will do us good.

So it is official, no more BMW Quadruplets. Meet the Astro Boys.

Twinkies & Twiggies

Ownership

THE event is next week. It will be my last. Sigh. But as they say, if the decision makes you feel relieved, then it is the right one.

Ok, something entirely different, since I was having this conversation, here's a good tip to enjoy your work- ownership.

I know. It is quite common sense, but not many of us remember that greater level of involvement brings greater level of job satisfaction. Especially for those who manages downward, if you want to make people who work for you happy, you must involve them, give them more ownership and eventually let go.

I must say I'm very lucky and am very grateful. So if I become an authoritarian in exchange for efficiency, please, point me back here. Thanks.

Myvi anyone?

NAP 2010 announced:

Gradual introduction of Vehicle End of Life Policy. For starters vehicles above 15 yrs will have to undergo mandatory inspection during renewal of road tax.

That means I have less than a year to get a new car. This is not good.

No More Bumming Sunday.

Yes. No more because work is piling up, I spent my entire Sunday working from home.

Despite that, I randomly rang up Siang Wei in Taipei and asked him if he would like to go pee. Our conversation over the phone was broken down to four parts because the phone line was so bad. Yet, it is good to know that we still greet each other the same twisted way.

But it wasn't just work no play. The night before Jess and I went to Akon's Beach Concert thanks to Joyce! Had some fun in the rock zone, even though my legs went numb after.

Nearing the end of the concert, a tree fell down and injured a few concert goers, one got her hand scratched, while the other was escorted out with her face covered in her own hands. O.O

On Friday night, we went to watch 500 Days of Summer. I liked it. My favourite part goes like this ( or at least how I remember it):

Boy: "You didn't want to get married. I don't understand, what happened?"
Girl: "I just know it"
Boy: "What is IT?"
Girl: "Things that I'm unsured of when I was with you".

Ouch. Anyway, the male lead reminded me of Tze.

Oh, good news.
* I'm promoted =)

Return of the Procrastinator

I know... I procrastinated, so to make it up, I have here, an awesome video to show you.

Caution: Contains nudity.

It reminded me KDU College PJ Room 103.

To show you that I've actually TRIED to write something during my long hiatus, here are some bits and pieces...

***

My brother is in Hertfordshire, UK now.

The gang celebrated Alarm, Leonard and Jnic's birthday, it was a night of average seafood and drinking, and now we know that Absolut Pearl is nicer than Mango. Teeheehee. Teddy and HueiYih were with us too.

- written last week

***

The weather has been gloomy these past few days, reminded me the time when I used to love rainy days. Actually, I still do. I have a tiny luxury attached to my room- a balcony with two ply blinds made of wood. I insisted to not have any grills attached to my windows, a daring and some what stupid move if you consider where I live. But I have faith. I know someone up there is pleased to know that I love the sky.

Toilet

Kel told us about this weird guy who stood in front of the urinal for a long time, as long as the time Kel took to finish his business, wash his hands, and walk out from there. Even then, this guy wasn't done yet.

Worst part was, he moaned and talked to the wall...

Working with three other companies on the same floor has its shortcomings. One of the worst, is definitely sharing rest room. I've heard so many complaints for the ladies'. But it has never occured to me that the men's can be as problematic, until...

1. Someone smoked in the cubicle while I was in the one next to it.
2. Someone made mini snowman using the tissues.

I do not want to stereotype people, but the irresponsible behaviour just screams the culprits' profile out loud. They ride a motorbike, carry a leather sling bag, smoke, wear fake Ray-ban, torn polo shirts, and bad jeans.

If I can make a video about this and submit it to 15Malaysia. Yeah, I will be spammed to death and banned from entering Kampung Baru.

Great, they just made me a racists.

Another Year of Shorties

...is done.

I'm relieved really. This year, we did what we should toward the night, efficient and dynamic as a team (woah!). Oh yeah, when Ku 'Curi Tulang' during the Gala Night, we know we are doing a good job. LOL.

Late dinner made me gained so much weight recently. Sigh...

Fat boy wanna get slim

Awesome support from the office.

Phewiit~

Quote- "Murder on the dance floor" LOL. Thank you all~

However our job is far from finish. Profiling this year's winners, public screening, and sustaining the Shorties website come next. Pheww...

And yes, finally I got a picture with Sarimah Ibrahim, my idol. I look a bit, ehem, bad, but who cares right? I'm not the point here. Ha ha. Thanks Joyce for making this happened.

Shy~

I will blog more later, am pumped up for basketball now.

Cross Over

3 in 1

My work is my life, I said something like that right? Gee... the clip below is scarily funny, and to some extend, real. While I laugh to it, it also makes me wonder, what went wrong and how?

About a month ago, we launched the new BMW Z4 in Malaysia. It is a wonderful car, gorgeous inside and out. I have no experience driving it (duh...) so I can't tell you how awesome its performance is. However, Mr. Clarkson did.

Finally, a picture to brighten up your day. I promise I will blog more after Shorties ended!

Happy birthday. Tap tap nose.

Speak Easy

June whizzed by like kilobytes dashing through the copper line. The whole month was a massive blur of exciting and fast moving events.

You have my apology if you are one of the few who check in here often.

Among the most memorable items on my list is the Speak Easy, or Pecha Kucha session organized by MPRA, where I spoke about Lomography. I prepared power point slides and talking points for myself, aren’t you proud of me, LOL!

Thought I can handle public speaking pretty well, wrong! Thank goodness there were decent photos to distract them from my horrendous attempt to explain what is LOMO.

Speaking of which, I have some interesting photos to show here. Take a look and let me know what you think. They are quite exclusive and can’t be found else where, not even my Facebook. Well, at least not for the moment :)

Morale seems to be at all time low, but good company will keep me going. Don’t worry about it!

My Pet Project

***

Remember the movie "Clover Field"? The best part of the whole show was that it extended beyond the one hour plus show time. The production team went as far as creating myspace accounts for the characters and through virtual interaction, they enriched the storyline with off-screen mini stories and artificial character history.

Earlier today, I shared a teaser made for "The Negative Effect" documentary. The video now sits in Facebook and faces shown in the scene were tagged. Unknowingly, a web of mini stories were spun. You just need to check out the names tagged, and you will have access to individual 'LOMO' stories, and something more, their life.

Could this be the future of story telling? A new form of art? Where viewers have the freedom to decide how much details they want. You tell me.

BMW Shorties 2009 is launched!

The most anticipated event of the year (for me at least) is finally launched last Thursday on May 14, 2009!

Woo hoo~

Scene One: Seet's life a goner, take one, and... ACTION!!

***

I just came back from a presentation in MMU Cyberjaya. The university's Faculty of Creative Multimedia organised an Industry Preview for its final year students, and boy, allow me to say "Where have you guys been all these while?!"

The quality of work, the creativity, the story... they were so profesionally done!

Mr. Harold, the faculty dean said, "You guys have shown high quality works, which I'm not surprised."

Well said Mr. Harold. I sat through twenty short animations, and I was smiling from ear to ear.

After the Industry Preview ended, we went to the front and presented BMW Shorties. It was followed by a short Q&A, and just to recap:

1. What's the procedure for participation?
- Download the entry form in our website, make your short film, and submit them to the address stated in the form before 30 June 2009.

2. Who holds the rights of the film made using BMW Shorties grant?
- BMW Malaysia holds the rights to it. Having said that, BMW sells cars, not films. Holding the rights gives us the freedom to publicise it in the best way we can. Our past winners went as far as Rotterdam and Oberhausen Film Festival.

3. What about films that are owned by institutions such as university, will there be any conflict?
- We encourage original entries. Thus, all participants must only submit film which they own the right to, or given the consent by relevant parties. This includes visuals and soundtracks too.

Story tellers, now that the stage is set, it is time for you to take it over.

Good luck.

Feel The Joy

Apart from the fact that I went to Kuching drive event completely over-dressed (mental note to self: drive = smart casual, no matter how the old clippings say otherwise), I quite enjoyed my time there. Really, it was a fun sight to see churches in kampung.

I became buddy with a cab driver during my first hour there, his name is Mr. Lim. He has two daughters and has been driving taxi for the past 14 years. He told me to try Kolo Mee, so I did. It was ok. Not as shockingly good when I first tried Indo Mee at mamak stall with Telur Mata.

Unfortunately I didn't have the chance to try Sarawak Laksa (was planned for next day morning but ran out of time, why? I overslept). My host brought me to eat Rojak Ayam, and it was ok too.

I have a photo album here.

***

Tomorrow is the launch of BMW Shorties 2009!!! We are crazily excited. Photocopy machine is making lots of noise now, drum..drum..drum.. That's Jess printing the news releases, but it sounds like call to war drum to me. Our new friend came to enlist himself for national service, he will officially report to duty on 1st June 09, Monday.

After that, I'm off to Kota Kinabalu for the second part of East Malaysia media drive.

Epic feel the joy man~

Event-overload

I think May is going to be event-overload for me.

1. The BMW Shorties Facebook Page is up and running. Yes, you heard it right, THE event is back this year, I'm super excited~
2. AB events are confirmed, so I will be going to East Malaysia real soon. Twice.
3. Another event code name 'DT' is confirmed too.

Aww man, the long weekend is just too short.

Teoh

Since our friend put it in FB first, I'm going to race her to announce this in blogspot.

Teoh Seet Heng is the only Teoh in the entire Fleishman-Hillard network of more than 2,000 employees worldwide.

YES! Done. A moment of I'm proud to be a Malaysian Chinese.

***

Since we are on the topic, my surname 张 is pronounced as Zhang in Mandarin. It is a very common surname among Chinese, and is the 24th surname on 百家姓 (Book of Family Names), after 何 (He) 吕(Lv) 施 (Shi), and is followed by 孔 (Kong), 曹 (Cao), 严 (Yan), 华 (Hua).

If you must know, the number one surname on the list is 赵(Zhao), that is because the book was compiled during the Song Dynasty and the emperor then was 赵匡胤 (Zhao Kuang Yin), so obviously he got the first place. Politics... Zzzz.

So anyway, forget about the Zhao guy, my surname is pronounced differently in different parts of China, by different ethnics, using different dialects. The southeners such as TeoChew and Hokkien Chinese pronounce it as Teo, like Deo with a T. And they call my dad Lao Teo (Old Teoh), until I succeed it. One day, hopefully not so soon :P

When my ancestors came to Malaysia, they speak nothing except TeoChew or Hokkien, not even Mandarin. So the foreign ID officers back then will just have to guesstimate the spelling.

And that is how variations such as Teoh, Teo, Teow come about. It also became a way for Malaysian Chinese to identify which part of China he or she comes from. Like since I'm a Teoh, that makes me a TeoChew from TeoChew Province, east of GuangDong Region. Famous Teohs in Malaysia includes Adrianna Teoh, Lina Teoh and Seet Teoh.

So if you ask how many Zhang is in FH network, the answer is seven. One in Malaysia (me), two in Singapore and four in Beijing. Having said that, I wouldn't know if they are the same Zhang as me (张),or they could be 章 which is an entirely different word, but pronounced similarly.

But there is only one Teoh, and that is me!

Wow I certainly went a big circle to tell you that. LOL.

Edited: Just found out that the two 张 in Singapore are 'Teo', my 'Teoh" remains unique! Ha ha。 ha.

The Great Escapade: My Fun Travel with MAS!

When stress and dirty shoes were piling up, three friends planned to escape from routine. The idea was simple; go to somewhere near but not too near, at least inaccessible by colleagues, and preferably out of the country.

One of them needs retail therapy, one wished for comfort, while the other thinks erected polo shirt collars is so yesterday.

So they scratched their head and convened.

A: I think we should take a flight, instead of bus. Saw that accident in papers today?
B: Yeah, you are right.
C: Totally.
A: Okay, check out this "Kids Fly Free" package, it says we purchase two tickets, and get one free for the little one.
B: Who is the little one?
C: I want Choki-choki.
A: See.
B: But “retard-ness” doesn’t count, age does!
A: How old are you kid?
C: The same as you punk.
B: Ok, get serious, "80% Discount" package looks good, it says 80% off domestic and ASEAN destination.
C: O.o
A: Cool~ more money to shop!
B: And massage!
C: And food!
A, B, C: YEAY!
B: How about "Economy Plus", enjoy business class privileges and comfort with an Economy Class ticket?
A: We should get that for return.
C: I second that!
B: Good idea, A, you mind to hunt down the tickets?
A: Cool.
C: So where are we going?

Where ever that place was, I’m sure they had a good time. Well, above all I remember what C said after the trip- Man! That was great. This truly is the time to travel!

Yes or No,瞬间结束,大快人心。

Having said that,我不担保会准。(PR人喜欢说having said that,因为喜欢留后路)

MINI X LOMO

The films for MINI Lomography shoot done in Putrajaya is finally out! Yeay~

...

Ok, I lied, I got them about a week ago and procrastinated until now to post it up. So may I humbly present to you five of my favourite shots!

For this shoot, I used Konica Chrome Slides, courtesy of Alarm (Practical birthday gifts! Awesome~).

To be honest, I think the colour is great, but really difficult to use. As you can see, the result is grainy even though it was a bright sunny day.

Gasp, Fisheye 2 is so damn cool. It made me broke, it makes me happy :)

If you drive a MINI, you can park anywhere.

Or you can park decently, and show the car behind he needs to retake his parking test.

Aiya, I mean his or her driving test, I shouldn't be a sexist.

There are some more pictures here.

Alarm posted his work in Lomography Asia forum and was selected as the Lomohome of the Week. WAH~

I don't think he will mind. This is the winning pix:

The Fisheye View of Sandakan

In my line of work, one is blessed with opportunity to visit places where under any normal circumstances wouldn’t have the chance to. But what is normal anyway? Visiting Sandakan might be ‘out of place’ for me, but for scores of others, it could be part of their annual, monthly or even weekly ‘balik kampung’ ritual.

Anyway, I was on a trip to Sandakan with Kenny Sia and Gareth (Shaolin Tiger) last weekend for the launch of MAS Kuala Lumpur-Sandakan direct flight. We visited the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre and spent a day on the Kinabatangan River bank.

Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre

River folk in Kinabatangan River.

So during the trip, I brought along my new FishEye2. This funky looking thing was my birthday gift bought a week ago, by guess who, myself. Retail therapy (Thanks Geeps) is effective and inevitable since I worked on top of the most popular mall in Malaysia. For those unfamiliar with lomocam, this baby runs on film.

Armed with a roll of ISO 400 film, I happily embraced the number one lomography philosophy- don’t think just shoot. It wasn’t easy, transitioning from SLR (yes without the D) to this toy like snap-shot device. I can’t zoom, can’t do focusing, even the shutter sounded surreal to me. Everything needs to be guesstimated- lighting, distance, framing... I have no choice but to just. let. go.

The result?

Fisheye guide book says, this is the way gold fish and lomographers see and live life.

To which Kelvin Lim said: “Does that mean you live with five seconds memory?”

I agree with both. Whole-heartedly.

P/S: Yay, MAS posted it in their blog!

My Five Days MINI Birthday Celebration

Last Friday, 20 March was my birthday. Celebration-wise, nothing special really, spent the night with Alarm, Timo and Pris eating steamboat in Klang and Thye joined us for mamak later.

But March is a magical month. For work purpose, I was given a red with white top MINI Cooper for the weekend. The task was to lomograph the MINI in Putrajaya on Saturday, in conjunction with Malaysia first Hot Air Balloon Competition.

So obviously on Friday night, we went steamboat with the MINI. Ha ha.

For the task and to reward myself, on Saturday before the shoot in Putrajaya, I bought the Fisheye 2 Chrome edition in Mooks, the Gardens :D

The shoot in Putrajaya will be covered in another post. There was too much to tell.

At night, I went to the Negative Effect Promo Video Screening at NZX.

Watch it in HQ! Or visit the Facebook page, somehow it loads faster there.

The instant cam shown during the first minute was exactly the Lo-Fi one I used in Taipei, you can even spot me ‘begging’ for it in the video. LOL. I have a total of 2 seconds screen time without dialogue.

On Sunday, met up with a few lomographers in IKEA again and did a few more shoots in Shah Alam with the MINI. At night, Nico, Fuzz, Zoe and I hung out at Changkat Bukit Bintang to celebrate Zoe and my birthday.

The waitress gave us massage voucher worth RM200! Yippee~

My birthday wish? Learn how to enjoy my work, and plan it to be enjoyable. LOL.

On Monday, I returned the car to Cyberjaya and while on my way back to office, my Proton Saga's tyre was ripped off, literally. I have no idea how it happened, and how I survived it without crashing or skidding my car. As I stepped down from the car, a MEX's patrol truck pulled over and changed the tyre for me. Some luck I had.

The story didn’t end on Monday after I returned the car. More precious MINI experience ahead and that will be blogged separately too~

Thumbdrive”
