Obituary - Common Sense

London Times Obituary
We Mourn The Passing Of An Old Friend - Common Sense

Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years.

No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape.

He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as :
Knowing when to come in out of the rain;
Why the early bird gets the worm;
Life isn't always fair;
and maybe it was my fault.

Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you can earn)
and reliable strategies (adults, not children, are in charge).

His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place.

Reports of a 6-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate;
teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch;
and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student,
only worsened his condition.

Common Sense lost ground
when parents attacked teachers for doing the job
that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children.

It declined even further
when schools were required to get parental consent
to administer sun lotion or an Aspirin to a student;
but could not inform parents
when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.

Common Sense lost the will to live
as the churches became businesses;
and criminals received better treatment than their victims.

Common Sense took a beating
when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar in your own home
and the burglar could sue you for assault.

Common Sense finally gave up the will to live,
after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot.
She spilled a little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.

Common Sense was preceded in death, by his parents, Truth and Trust,
his wife, Discretion,
his daughter, Responsibility,
his son, Reason

He is survived by his 4 stepbrothers;
I Know My Rights,
I Want It Now,
Someone Else Is To Blame,
I'm A Victim

Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone.

If you still remember him, pass this on.
If not, join the majority and do nothing.

About Work

Just like how I've learn in college, PR and journalist does not see eye to eye.

Back then, I was also one who thought that PR is THE dark side for comm people.

Why not? Since advertising is about producing creativity/ artwork that sell to consumer, and journalists are in the mission to report the truth, what business does a PR person do?

Write something, make it sound newsworthy and send it out?

Organize an event, doll up the place and drown media in barrels of alcohol?

Currently working as one, I say… Yes. We do everything mentioned above.

We do it because after a million trees planted by various companies, newspapers think that car accident is much more interesting than million dollar investment to ensure those trees actually grow.

And *some media* LURVE the alcohol. They get angry if you don’t invite them. They get angry if you don’t personally call to RSVP for them. They get angry if they came late and door gifts are finished…

Now, I don’t know how to lead you to my next point so I’m not going to.

A PR person might be in *some way* weigh by the amount of media friends they know (reluctantly I must agree); Media might find themselves in similar situation, where enjoying good relationships with PR persons get you the first scoop, faster access to information, exclusive interviews and ultimately, an edge over your peers.

Having said ALL that, I find myself nodding my head off to what Nade wrote. There is a lot of truth in his article. But it is the system inability to hire the right person for the right job, and the failure of the elected leader to act accordingly. At the end of the day, both ‘spin-doctor’ and Nade are just doing their job.

AND I’m just doing my job too, so leave me alone!

the Corrs.

And so Jon's tag got me all over 6 things I like, most passionate about, listen to, reading, bla bla bla... I went on a nostalgic search of what influenced my music taste the most.

I found them. The first band that I listened to, when I was 12.

Lough Erin Shore

I used to think it was LAUGH Erin Shore.. lol, I'm Chinese educated mar.

Toss the Feathers

Haste to the Wedding

And definitely this one... it's going into my (and million others) wedding playlist.

Everything about them impresses me. Female drummer, violin, tin whistle, pop-folk-traditional-mix...!! They became the benchmark of every band, music I stumbled upon later in life, ooh yes, boy bands never stood a chance :D

jon's tag

OK, since Jon tagged me, and since he is kinda like my boss… so I guess it’s compulsory.

6 things I'm passionate about:
1) Hanging out with friends
Even going to places and doing things that I don’t really enjoy.

2) Shopping alone
When I agree to go to mall with someone, I’m actually hanging out with him/ her. When I do shop, I do it by myself.

3) Basketball
If only I can skip work and watch NBA live… Not forgetting that playing basketball with my buddies is beyond fun.

4) Outdoor
I’m just not myself when I’m in-door. I get tired easily; move slower, and less happy.

5) Arts
Photography, music, theatre, paintings, films, orchestra, comics… I don’t like to study them though, that just kills the fun.

6) City
I love cities, I love living in a city and everything that it can offer.

6 books I read(ing) recently:

1) Giddens’ novel
Think I had read more than 20 of his novels since early this year.

2) Sterling Seagrave’s Lord of the Rim
A book about the invisible empire of Overseas Chinese

3) Peter Mayle’s Expensive Habits
For my writing exercise, still I really enjoyed reading it

4) Eon Colfer’s The Wish List
Also for my writing exercise, I love stories with demons

5) William Strunk Jr’s The Elements of Style
Obviously for my writing exercise, don’t think I can finish it anytime soon

6 songs I can listen to over and over again:

1) Goo Goo Dolls - Iris
2) Panic in the Disco – I write sins, not tragedies
3) Andra & the Backbone – Sempurna
4) Hope – Who Am I
5) BEP – Feel It
6) Soda Green - 是我的海

6 things I learnt this past year:

1) I’m happy with my career switch
2) I’ve a bunch of amazing friends~
3) I work best under stress
4) I’m getting the things that I wanted since last year
5) I can tolerate A LOT of things (Jon yells: Stop being a doormat!)
6) I’m gaining weight

6 valuable things I own:

1) My family
2) My friends
3) My job
4) My room
5) My laptop
6) My appreciation for diversity

6 bloggers I tag:

Jni
Swei
Alarm & Noel
Claudia
Enki
Gaikkie

Am I good enough?

I’m excited.

While I type down my thoughts for an upcoming campaign, my mind travels back to 5th December 2008. It was my first day at work. I witnessed peoples from my agency on stage receiving awards. That night, I was happy that I’m going to work with this bunch of talented people.

What I wasn't aware then, is that the opportunity for me to prove myself in the same award winning campaign would arrive so fast…

Am I good enough?
Am I good enough to work on this marvellous campaign inherited from great peoples who conceptualised it?

I’m sure I have the passion and determination to last me through it. I know I’m ready because instead of worry, I feel energized. There’s so much in my head that I wanted to put into this campaign. There are so many ideas…

This will be a challenge for me, and I will answer my own question next year.

I’m excited.

my work life

Let's blog a little bit about my work, that makes up 99% of my life.

This is where I work. I also eat, shop, watch movie, hang out, get my hair cut and spend my weekends here.

Everyone working here is in a rush.

KL city view from Joyce's corner. I like~ Makes me happy.

Like many other kinds of work, presentation happened very often. Here are some funnier moments during the pre stage.

This is Paprika's office. Jon and Kel brainstorming. Obviously someone was not contributing at that moment.

While Ku stayed away from us, the retards.

Ku and Jermyn emitting sheer awesomeness.

Kel stoning, Jon was hungry. We stayed till 2am.

Jon, after presentation.

How often do you get to take picture with an airplane this close?

This is my work life. It roxx~

Cars.People.Work.Fun.

These are black and whites taken during the media weekend drive. I like~ But I'm running out of cash to do film SLR... Should I switch over to digital? I'm not a purist, not even dare to call myself that... But... Film gives me a kind of excitement that digital can't... Instant gratification is not what I'm looking for in photography, I have other stuff for that purpose...

Oops, why don't we just move on to the pictures.

The Randoms

The People

This girl is running out of expression.

The Cars

Last is this nice restaurant in Ipoh called Indulgence. Ooh~ Vennese said she will buy me a meal there when I visit Ipoh with her, cool!

sedate me with popcorn

Today is the forth day I linger around my house, enjoying the pace of purposeless life. The past three days were cool, I did breakfast, lunch and dinner with friends, played some late night mahjong, hanged out in mamak, owned Gears of War with my brother, watched seven movies in DVD, went to cinema twice, played basketball and finished the book I was reading.

But everyday no matter what time I went to bed, I failed to sleep in the next morning. Normally it takes 3 snoozes to wake me up, and an extra minute in bed is the sweetest thing on earth. But... when I CAN do it, I just WAKE up... sigh... SIGH... ARGH!

Also, I hate watching movie without popcorn and coke, experienced it just now and it was horrible. I was very cranky, grunted at every latecomers and WTF one of them who stepped on my shoe. It was so not me.

Note to self: Must get popcorn and coke next time, or else I might get myself killed.

Selamat Hari Raya

Today I woke up two hours before i should. I think work has made a habit out from me. Nevermind.

Anyway, it is a great morning. Dogs are barking outside, normally I'm out even before they are awake. Today is the first day of Raya. I switched on the TV to watch Ntv7 Breakfast Show and saw the guy who brought back a brain from LA for me hosting it. Ha ha ha! He is now happily married to a wonderful lady whom got me into Ntv7 in 2006 December. Ahh... I miss working in TV station.

Oh oh! last night I went to the Gamarjobat show again! Ketch! and Hiropon are still as awesome as ever. Ha, last year I was there with a date, ahh, I think Jni might still remember her great sacrifice to give up the ticket for my date, Hahahaha, you are the best la. This year, with my colleagues. Not too bad (a flying kick on its way)

What? You have not heard of Gamarjobat before? Go, go, go, before you miss it again!

Hmm, in another hour I will be going to have lunch with several old friends. I'm so proud of them, so let me show you how they look like when they were two years younger.

(L-R) Noel, Natalie, Leonard, Erica, HL

(L-R) Leonard, Alarm, HL

(L-R) Noel and Noel. Serious.

Ar ha ha ha ha.. I'm happy! Except Alarm and Noel (the one on the left, ha ha) who are still oversea, everyone else will be present later. Yoo Hoo!

Selamat Hari Raya to everyone!
